The Mutant Ages – X-Men: The Animated Series – Time Fugitives (Part 1)

Maddy and Ryan continue their journey through the second season of X-Men: The Animated Series, and they’ve reached another terrifying and prescient episode about the Friends of Humanity, Marvel Comics’ anti-mutant terrorist group. “Time Fugitives, Part 1” weaves a confusing web of time travel shenanigans with our favorite time jockeys, Bishop and Cable, but it also manages to stuff in a metaphor for the AIDS crisis and plenty of reminders of our current divisive political climate. Unfortunately, Apocalypse is also in this episode, for some reason. More importantly, Cable makes friends with a tiny cube, and that cube is our new favorite character.

X-Men Spotlight: Graydon Creed, the odious leader of the Friends of Humanity

The Mutant Ages – Gambit’s Origin Story or something

Today: Gambit’s ORIGIN STORY or something

Maddy and Ryan dove into X-Men: The Animated Series take on Gambit’s origin in “X-Ternally Yours” which featured Betty Spagetty as the Great Fairy from Zelda, rising up from the post-apocalyptic ruins of Lousiana’s swamps where rivaling thieves and assassins guilds are making offerings to her with golden butter dishes, staged like West Side Story.

Yeah, you would THINK Maddy and Ryan made this up — So that’s why we made this video.

The Mutant Ages – X-Men: The Animated Series – X-Ternally Yours

THE TITHE! This episode isn’t called “The Tithe.” But it should be. Ryan and Maddy watched “X-Ternally Yours,” an X-Men: The Animated Series episode that tells us Gambit’s backstory, but it doesn’t make any sense. It’s hilarious, though, and who doesn’t enjoy hearing voice actors with their best (worst) approximation of Cajun accents telling you about the tithe? You’ll never find out what the tithe actually is, but we make our best guesses.

X-Men Spotlight: GAMBIT, that slippery Cajun and longtime fling of Wolverine!

Arisia 2018!

Maddy and Ryan attended Arisia, Inc. at the Boston Westin Waterfront Hotel this past weekend. They had the opportunity to speak on a variety of panels including about the X-Men, Legion, MCU, stage make-up and video games.

This was honestly a great and fun convention! We recommend it if you are looking for some interesting programming and a place with very chill vibes.

Also featured in this video is a tour of Maddy’s apartment, dinner at Legal Seafood Test Kitchen with Katie, a slumber party with Jungle 2 Jungle, getting lost at Logan Airport (A place they didn’t need to go), and Maddy dropping her sunglasses.

The Mutant Ages – Meet the Flintstones

Remember that time Maddy couldn’t get over Fred Flintstone in the background of X-Men: The Animated Series?

Well, we put this together so you can also be baffled by this strange costume party.

The Mutant Ages – X-Men: The Animated Series – Red Dawn

This week, Maddy and Ryan wish they had paid more attention in history class, because they’re pretty sure that X-Men: The Animated Series’ take on the dissolution of the Soviet Union didn’t involve a tentacled super-mutant laying waste to Eastern Europe. That’s what happens in “Red Dawn,” but don’t worry–the X-Men are on the scene, ready to intervene in an international incident! Meanwhile, Jubilee sets the standard for Nazi-punching bravery in this episode. Hell yeah.

The Mutant Ages – Whatever It Takes

Sometimes, X-Men: The Animated Series is packed with prescient political allegories. And sometimes… it’s not.

The third episode of the show’s second season isn’t political and it’s not even accurate to the comic books. In spite of that, we enjoyed the heck out of it. This week, Maddy and Ryan cover Storm’s manufactured backstory in X-Men: TAS, as well as her canonical backstory from the comic books, and the various retcons involved. Since there’s almost no politics to discuss this week, we spend that time talking about our favorite black female heroines of the ’70s and ’80s Marvel era (Misty Knight and Monica Rambeau) and, later, detail our frustrations with the current state of the live-action adaptations of the X-Men and the MCU. Sooo, strap in for that rant!

Also, we have a special announcement: We will be at Arisia 2018, speaking on panels about the X-Men, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, videogames and horror make-up!

The Mutant Ages – Til Death Due Us Part (Part 2)

Welcome to the Mr. Sinister Show! Mwahahhaa!! Maddy and Ryan have a villain-packed episode for you this week. The second episode of season 2 of X-Men: The Animated Series is all about our favorite campy villain and his henchman, who call themselves The Nasty Boys. This episode has some serious moments, but it’s mostly goofy and delightful — and the queer subtext is barely subtext at this point. It’s just text.

The Mutant Ages – X-Men TAS: Til Death Due Us Part (Part 1)

Maddy and Ryan return to X-Men: The Animated Series for the premiere of the second season, a strong episode that walks the line between serious political commentary and goofy fun times. Guess what? Morph’s back, and he’s ready to play all sorts of mind games on the X-Men. Meanwhile, the Friends Of Humanity are also playing mind games on the X-Men, except that’s way less fun to watch.

X-MEN SPOTLIGHT: Mr. Sinister, the glam god of plot holes and sexy torture! At last, Marvel’s goofiest antagonist has arrived on the scene.
